Imagine a world where everything is controlled by a touch of your ipad, where food is sourced locally and where there is a greenhouse that supplies all the cocktail ingredients used in the hotel. It’s not a fairytale, it’s the QO Amsterdam.
“The QO was born of the need to stop the wasteful, one-use approach to hospitality. Instead, we want to prove that embracing a sustainable, circular approach is the only way to create a genuinely positive impact – for both people and planet.”
If that’s not a tagline that makes you want to know more about QO Amsterdam then I don’t know what is.
The rooms are the perfect mix of technology and luxury, with waterfall showers, blackout blinds, huge TVs and comfy beds. Most of the room is controlled by an iPad beside your bed and can be used to mirror your phone to the TV so you have a giant screen at your fingertips.
As well as tech and luxury, situated on the roof of QO Amsterdam is an urban greenhouse full of vegetables, fruits, herbs and edible flowers. Fresh produce grown on the roof are enjoyed from the hotel restaurant Persijn all the way to the bar Juniper & Kin on the top floor.
Creating a sustainable environment in the hotel is a priority.
The QO greenhouse will eventually be a full circle system – using fish and plants together to provide an equally beneficial ecosystem that is self-sufficient. The fish waste will provide an organic food source for the plants and the plants will also purify the water for the fish. Once the fish have lived out their natural lifecycle in the tanks they will be used to prepare meals for guests. As a vegan, it’s heartening to hear that the fish will only be served once they have naturally died is a definite step up from normal restaurants. The restaurant was very accommodating and their vegan sharing menu was delicious, apart from the desert. Never eat pumpkin ice cream. I’ve warned you. The hotel actually has a lot of little sustainable touches on top of the greenhouse, like using all water from showers and sinks to flush the toilets so it’s not just one use or the exterior changing with the temperature to conserve energy.
If you are looking for a quick getaway this winter the QO Amsterdam should be top of your list. You can also travel to Amsterdam Via boat if you are thinking about the impact of your flight.
