Why are we suddenly so afraid of a simple phone call?
Can you remember the last time you called your bestie for a gossip instead of just Whats-Apping her or sending gifs on FB messenger? Phone your friend, she just might need you.
I remember getting into SO much trouble when I was a teenager (I never got a mobile until I was 16!) for spending HOURS talking to my friends on the phone, racking up huge phone bills and generally pissing off my parents. Even if I’d spent most of the day with my bestie there was always something else to tell her…when did we stop picking up the phone?
It’s not for a chat or a gossip, now you call someone when somethings gone wrong. And that is why when the phone rings it fills us with dread. If my mum calls I instantly assume someone is dead, if it’s an unknown number then it’s a hospital and my mum is dead, if one of my friends calls it’s never “Hi how are you?”, it’s always “Hey are you ok?” Worst of all if I actually call my husband and he doesn’t answer….well he’s dead.
You might think these the insane rambling of an over anxious over thinker but studies have found that anxiety is on the rise in Women between 18 and 30, and I know for a fact some of my friends have close to a panic attack when the phone rings with an unknown number, the list of awful things that could be at the other end of that number flashing before their eyes.
We use our phone’s on average around 85 times a day, Instagramming that perfect flat lay, or checking twitter to see what your favourite celebs/bloggers/YouTubers have been up to but we never actually pick up the phone, so much so that phone companies have seen a dramatic decline in people actually calling from their phones, with the average being once a week!
Phone your friend, she needs you.
So how do we combat this?
CALL SOMEONE! They might not answer (don’t assume they are dead) or might text you after asking if you are ok, or asking what you want, just tell them your going to call them back for a gossip, don’t say chat because that sounds way too ominous.
Pick a friend at random, or better yet think of someone you haven’t seen in a while, it may have been due to work commitments, or they may seem to be having the best time on social media but are they really ok?
So do yourself and your friends a favour, pick up the phone and have a chat, you’ll never know how much they needed that call.
