10 cult movies

There are cult movies and then there are cult movies actually worth watching, take my advice and grab the popcorn, you’re going to need it.

10 cult movies that are worth the hype

True romance

A love story about misfits, this is only of my all time favourite movies, a star studded cast and written by Quentin Tarantino it’s a must see. I don’t want to say too much incase you haven’t seen it….so just go and watch it. Alabama’s wardrobe gives me life.

Highlight – The Ending (you’ll be holding your breath the whole time)

Death becomes Her

With Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn & Bruce Willis as the leads this movie has some serious actors. It’s funny, tongue in cheek and pokes endless fun at the cosmetic surgery industry, plus who doesn’t want to see Isabella Rossellini swimming in a bath full of milk?

Highlight – When Helen gets shot.

Empire Records

Coming of age movie set in the coolest music store anyone could possibly work in. Robbery, Rex Manning & a funeral, this movie has it all. Liv Tyler, Renee Zellweger and Robin Tunney have the perfect dysfunctional relationship & you will have a great time discussing which boy is the cutest.  Watch it, even if it’s just for the sound track.

Highlight – Everything Mark does or the insanely epic ending.

This is a hard watch, NY kids doing what they do best, causing general mayhem. You will not expect the ending. Again just another one of those movies you have to watch. Intense, heartbreaking and unforgettable. I don’t know if you’ll thank me for this one.

Highlight – I don’t think there is one.

Girl Interrupted

Angelina Jolie & Winona Ryder give amazing performances in this heart wrenching movie. Based in a Mental Hospital it documents the destructive relationships of all the characters focusing on Susanna and Lisa’s intense relationship.

Highlight – Susanna having a bath supervised by Valerie (Whoopi Goldberg)

Party Monster

Based on Michael Alig’s rise and fall from the club kid scene, full of insane outfits, one liners and a banging soundtrack. Watch it if you’ve ever felt like the freak, the outcast, the loser, just be warned, it will make you want to go clubbing in NYC more than ever – ‘just throw a little glitter on it honey & go dancing’ – words to live by.

Highlight – Marylin Manson cameo & all of Chloe Sevingy’s outfits

Romeo and Juliet

This is THE only movie version of Romeo & Juliet that I will ever watch. It brings Shakespeare to life with a very modern twist, even over 10 years later. You Fall in love not only with Romeo and Juliet but with everything, the costumes, the language, even the insane gun wielding Prince of Cats. For me Mercutio was played utterly perfectly & his death scene was heart breaking. A plague on both your houses indeed.

Highlight – Mercutio singing young hearts run free, the first kiss or Romeo Topless screaming for his Juliet…I just can’t decide.

The movie that made me fall in love with Christian Slater, who does’t love a bad boy am I right? I’ve never wanted to play croquet so much in my life, plus it’s choc full of amazing one liners – ‘What’s your damage Heather?’ Watch it and thank me later.

Highlight – Veronica smoking at the end…literally.

Cry Baby

This movie has everything, singing, dancing, jail breaks, a crying Johnny Depp & a pregnant Riki Lake, what more could you ask for? Well for one there’s Wanda a total babe with banging style and possibly the scariest girl you’ll ever love – hatchet face.

Highlight – Cry Baby strutting his stuff on stage.

The Craft

You can’t ask for more than 90’s badass witches can you? With outfits to die for an attitude to match you don’t get much better than The Craft. Made for outcast girls everywhere, with the perfect sleepover inspiration. Just don’t go calling the corners ok?

Highlight –  & the immortal line – ‘We are the weirdos Mister’

I love this. Death Becomes Her has been in my top ten forever. Can you believe I’ve never seen Empire Records…I think I need to rectify this immediately.
Have you seen Jawbreaker? I think you’d like it! X

I just saw True Romance for the first time the other day! I can definitely see how Alabama is a style icon. Great film and so much fun.

Wish I hadn’t revisited Empire Records as a grown-up though, you’d think I’d love it given the subject matter but it really hasn’t aged well 🙁

    Lis / last year’s girl x
